What Are Classifications?
Classifications are characteristics that determine the type of microprocessor in a broad sense. Characteristics of a microprocessor are normally determined at the beginning of its design as a set of design guide lines. For example, early in a chip's design it will be decided whether the chip will support variable length instructions or not. This initial design choice will have a significant impact on the final design. In many cases, you can classify microprocessor chips according to their design guide lines.
This section will cover the fundamental characteristics that determine whether a processor belongs to the following categories:
CISC
RISC
EPIC
